Putting Children First: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Am I eligible to apply if I have a masters degree but intend to apply to a doctoral program?
Answer: The program is geared for doctoral students and doctoral students will have priority in the application process; however, under extenuating circumstances (e.g., extensive experience), masters students will be considered. However please note, acceptance of masters students is very rare.
Is it economically feasible to live in New York City on the fellowship stipend?
Answer: Yes, fellows in past years have lived comfortably in New York City. The stipend affords fellows adequate financial resources to enjoy the many opportunities of New York City.
What sort of housing is available?
Answer: Housing is not guaranteed with fellow acceptance, but the National Center for Children and Families will assist fellows in finding adequate housing. Fellows, have the option to live anywhere within commuting distance to their site placement and Columbia University during the 8-week program.
What type of commitment does the fellowship entail?
Answer: Fellows work at their placements 4 days during the week (usually 9 am – 5 pm) and meet at the National Center for Children and Families at Teachers College for weekly seminars on the 5 th day. This fellowship is considered a full-time position.
Will I be able to choose my placement?
Answer: No, the program tries to match fellows' interests with their placements to the best extent possible. It is also our philosophy that diverse experience outside of one's immediate interest is valuable.
Do I need policy experience to be eligible for the program?
Answer: No, it is our assumption that participation in our program will provide policy experience not typically offered in a traditional graduate education.
Is it okay to call if I still have questions?
Answer: No, NCCF does not have the manpower to respond to every telephone inquiry. We are asking those with additional questions to email our administrative associate, Ali Hill, at: ahill@tc.columbia.edu
