Washington State's Early Learning and Development Benchmarks

The State of Washington has contracted the National Center for Children and Families to develop their early learning and development benchmarks or standards. Early Learning and development standards are statements of expectation of what children should know and be able to do. Most States in the U.S. have adopted early learning standards to inform early childhood educational instruction and curriculum. For the state of Washington, NCCF will be responsible for developing the early learning standards based on research and quality-practices and using an inclusive methodology. The Benchmarks are intended to promote reasonable expectations and strategies for those who care for and teach young children and to contribute to a potential unified early care and education system. The Benchmarks will be developed for children from birth to 72 months of age and across several domains of development.
